About the house

beautiful rooms in a rad, creative co-op

The Canopy is a diverse and dynamic 12-bedroom co-op house by Lake Merritt in Oakland, California. We share monthly chores, bi-weekly farmers market runs, and cooking Tuesday dinner.

The house

We live in a three-story walk-up, ten minutes from Lake Merritt, less than a mile from BART (many bus lines also stop near the house), and a ten-minute bike ride from downtown Oakland. There is ample street parking around the house, though no assigned spots.

Our expansive kitchen encourages cooking projects of all sorts, with a pantry, two refrigerators and a deep freezer stocked with local produce from the farmers market (included in the shared food plan). The main living room adjoins the kitchen and is a frequent site of both planned and unplanned gatherings.

The ground-level garage has been transformed into what we call the Dreamspace: a mixed-use creative space for music jams (there’s a stage!), dance parties and practices, art projects, woodworking (power tools included), and more.

The upstairs living room: a couch, shelves of records and books, and a guitar on the wall

Our love for Oakland

Oakland is an amazingly vibrant and diverse city, and we’d like our house to more and more reflect the city we live in. Even though most of us are not originally from here, we are mindful of how we contribute to gentrification, and want to give back to the community.
